First published in hardcover in 1986 and a paperback bestseller in the U.S. and U.K. in 1987, NEVADA is a gripping story about the growth of gaming in that state from 1920 to 1982. It follows the life of Meade Slaughter from a fourteen-year-old boy working in carnivals to one of the most powerful hotel and casino owners in Nevada. This is storytelling at it's best, with romance, tragedy, defeat, triumph, murder, revenge, beautiful women and real characters like Wilbur Clark, Beldon Katelman, Bill Harrah, Pappy Smith and his son, Harold and Benjamin "Bugsy" Siegel who peopled the colorful history of the Silver State.

My rating is 5 stars...Do you think I liked the book? You bet I liked it. It's the 2nd time I have read this book. Ultimately the subject of the story is thr growth of Nevada and the gambling industry. Add a few touches of drama, love, joy and sorrow and you have an interesting, dramatic story that follows a boy and his uncle as they find their way from Carney life to Reno, NV and the biggining of the gambling industry as we know it today. From the title I knew that I could relate to this tale since I my family has been in Las Vegas since the 50s. So much of the history written here I have been a particularly of in one way or another.
At one time I had been corresponding with the author but have since lost touch with him. I would love to get back in touch with him.

Nevada Clint McCullough 9780967599960 Books Reviews
Read it a few years ago. Enjoyed the historical years and the story line.
Tried to find it in paperback but to no avail. Finally found it as an e-book.
One of the best fiction books I have ever read. It combines a good fiction story with a lot of the history of Nevada.
Read this book several times over the years. First time was at the Stardust in'86 . Many memories were restarted.
Nevada is a historical novel by Clint McCullough, and was published in 1986. It is his first novel.
Deals with the life of a man named Meade Slaughter, who, starting out as a penniless orphan, works his way up to owner of one of the largest casinos in the state. The book covers the rise of Nevada as a playground for adults, and intertwines a story of sex, greed, avarice, drug addiction, murder, and gambling.
The story covers a great deal of history including the building of various casinos by some of the members of various criminal organizations; the south (Las Vegas) vs. north (Reno and Lake Tahoe) rivalry; the hotel fires in Las Vegas; how some casinos failed and were left partially finished, and stories of some of the more famous residents including Howard Hughes and Benjamin "Bugsy" Siegel.
More novel than historical, but still enough history to make it interesting. I was disappointed that there was only a brief mention of George Wingfield and the rest of the gang of four that ruled Reno for a half-a-century. Few Renoites today are aware of the influence and his gang had on setting the tone and direction for Reno and the rest of the state.
Las Vegas, NV is my home town. One elementary school and one high school. 4,000 residents. A rail road town (Union Pacific) settled by mormons. My father worked for the Santa Fe in San Bernardino and left to work on Boulder (Hoover) Dam. The novel closed a number of questions about how my father ended up with the UP rather than returning to the Santa Fe. The 22 mile long spur from Las Vegas was the Union Pacific. That's how he ended up with the UP. The sequence of gambling and hotels were very accurate. Most enjoyable and good second reading. Brought back many good memories.
I have had to keep buying copies to read every few years when I can't get to my older copy posthaste. This is one of the best, larger, fast reading books I've ever read. I bought it for a quarter (the first time) and really went to town on this. The author has a very driven competitive story with the backdrop of real people. How did Bennie Binion get to own a hotel with a homicide on his record, a duel, no less. Bill Harrah is mentioned, someone I was not familiar with. The author touches bases on the whole state of Nevada, with a mix of romantic affairs and business deals. It's a high-rolling romp through the history of NV. Oh, and a favorite of mine, the Smith Brothers from Harold's Club have a nice part in the early days of Reno. You cannot go wrong with this book!!
